about 5cm tall but easily spotted as so brilliant white with black on the gills

i agree and i also maked a mistake: mycena have white spores but when i see it good, yours appear to have dark spores !! take a look at the genus "inocybe" {will warn you is a Big genus}, now as referenz can i give you an example: Inocybe "geophylla". but just example, try to search a species in your area. -- some thought of possible genas: mycena: same shape but not the spore-color/ psathyrella: could not find some with the right coloration/ conocybe: most have to thin stem! / psilocybes: i dont have much infos in my holy-book {these pages were stolen}, and i do not really suspect it as one but it is in the shape proportion. good luck.
it's far too small to be an inkcap, only 5cm tall but I don't think it's the mycena polygramma Alex due to the colouring?
definitly a mycena, when it wasn't so white, i would suggest: mycena polygramma. take a look, julie
