Field Notes

Description:

These beetles, originally from Japan (hence the specific name), can grow to 15 mm long and 10 mm. They have a green thorax and head with copper-colored elytra. There is an attractive row of white dots around the bottom of the elytra with two larger ones on the rear. There is a slightly iridescent sheen over the entire beetle.

Habitat:

These were found on a week in the fenceline of a small, local park in Eastern Nebraska, USA (320 masl).

Notes:

The white spots were something I hadn’t noticed on other Japanese Beetles. They reminded me of a truck’s running lights with 2 larger taillights. As seen in several fotos, they are very destructive and leave only the skeleton of the leaves they feed on.

Yeah. They can really do a job on plants. Thanks Saturniidae
