Field Notes

Description:

Small size heron with quite compact shape characterized by having the neck, the legs and the beak relatively short and by the mainly white color of its plumage, in which hardly there are noticeable sexual differences. In the adult individual during the nuptial period the white color prevails, but adorned with tones between ocher and oranges in the pileus, the nape, the chest and the back. In addition, there is an intense reddish color in the beak, eye and legs. The non-breeding bird is much paler, with a slight-dye in the pileus, yellow beak and legs of a very variable color. The immatures are similar to the non breeding adults but completely white. This bird is very white and chubby in flight, with the most compact forms that other herons.

It is the most successful naturally expanding bird that started at the end of XIX century to expand from the tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and can be found now also in Europe, America and Asia, and even in Australia and New Zealand

Habitat:

Spotted in open prairie associated with cattle.
