Field Notes

Description:

This great egret was spotted fishing again this morning.

Habitat:

Urban riverine characterised by patches of regularly mowed giant reed and a high diversity of exotic urban landscape. Other species identified in the immediate ecosystem include: little egret, common moorhen, grey heron, common toad, European magpie and the exotic Louisiana crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) known locally as "gambero killer".

Notes:

It is only recently that we've been able to positively ID this as a great egret. There are little egrets and grey heron which also frequent this specific hotspot while all three species have also been seen in the nearby vicinity. Alberto a local naturalist with considerable experience has explained that the great egret is a relative newcomer which has not traditionally been seen in these parts. We are trying to determine if there is any interbreeding with the grey heron which is a very closely related species since there seems to be some behavioral evidence.
