Field Notes

Description:

The tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is a species of frogmouth native to Australia that is found throughout the Australian mainland and Tasmania. Tawny frogmouths are big-headed stocky birds often mistaken for owls due to their nocturnal habits and similar colouring. They are not raptorial birds, and are therefore not owls.

Habitat:

Saw 3 of these birds on a trip to the Boondall wetlands with Neil Ross and Shanna Bignell.

Brilliant photos, Pam. This fellow couldn't be bothered doing the 'stump' pose - sleep was a better option. Both birds were resting on native sheoak.
