Field Notes

Description:

This spotted hyena was found hiding away from the mid-day sun and well camouflaged under a bush in the Masai Mara. Spotted hyenas suffer a bad reputation as cowardly scavengers, but in fact get the majority of their food from hunting.

Habitat:

Savanna, grasslands, woodlands, forest edges, subdeserts and mountains to 13,000 feet. Distribution: occurs in all of Africa south of the Sahara with the exception ofthe Congo Basin

Notes:

Spotted hyenas were for a long time a nightmare for taxonomists, being first placed in the genus Canis and then in the Felidae, before the family Hyaenidae was created.
