Field Notes

Description:

Bald eagle chicks are brown the first year... their feathers and their eyes. Each year their white head and tail feathers fill in more until they are fully mature at 5.

For such a noble bird they have a very whining voice. Sometimes sounding more like a chicken than a big fierce bird, or like a gate hinge that needs oiling... check out the calls on the Cornell Lab link.

Habitat:

Nest on Island overlooking a protected bay with harbor seal pupping ledge and tern nests within striking distance. The adults decimate the tern colony every summer to feed their chick and they seem to relish the pup afterbirth.

Notes:

When I took this photo, my dog and I were drifting under the chick in the canoe, I had my big honking 500mm lens on and cropped the heck out of this so I wasn't quite as close as it looks. Selkie was pacing back and forth in the boat and I had to time the photos for when she wasn't moving so I am pretty happy with the results.

Today (January 25, 2012) a juvenile eagle flew over the car as I was headed to town. I am pretty sure it was this youngster: still had the super dark plumage of a young bird and it's birth nest was not far "as the crow flies". Glad to see it has survived so far.
You are welcome.. I was hoping that the administrators did this a while back!!
Great thanks! "Wildlife has no respect for boundaries " and that is how it should be. Thanks for starting this mission!
Hello Gale, I did go into the mission and added some additional wording concerning the boundary of this mission.. As I said, the radius is 50 miles across from Machias bay to the open ocean on the South..Wildlife has no respect for boundaries as is..
It is not quite in Acadia, but Frenchman Bay... that o.k? All my photos are from that area so's not to flood your mission with photos I'll wait for an invite or some guidelines.
Great shot.. I love to piercing look on its eyes..Wow.. Please add it to the Acadia National Park mission.. Nick
