Field Notes

Description:

A medium sized finch that is basically brown with white stripes. The head, neck and breast is a bright strawberry red on the male. The female is completely brown with white streaks which are blurred on the head.

The often confused Purple finch female has clearer lines on the head and the male of the Purple finch has a darker raspberry red and it covers more of the body of the bird.

Habitat:

These examples were seen in a small town, the early morning of a hot summer day in the top of an Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) in west central Iowa at 375 masl.

Notes:

Just happen to catch them sitting still in bright sunlight. Note the pristine condition of the evergreen and bright blue sky. Perfect.

Thanks Brian. It doesn't happen all that often, but it's nice when it does.
Perfect indeed! I just love it when you can capture male and female in the same frame!
