Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Nymphaliini; Hypolimnas bolina philippensis Butler, 1874. The Great Eggfly shown here is a male. This ssp. is also called Common Eggfly or Blue Moon Butterfly (according to Philippine Lepidoptera). There are two other H. bolina ssp. recorded in the Philippines: H. bolina joloana (Fruhstorfer, 1912) and H. bolina kezia (Butler, 1877). The ssp. joloana is present in a number of southern parts of the Philippines and kezia is only present in one island province in the far north of the country. H. bolina philippensis is the ssp. here in Luzon.

Habitat:

Spotted in foliage at the side of a narrow track. The area is sparsely populated and mostly covered by remnants of tropical forest.

Notes:

Much of the information I have mentioned in Description above is from a scientific paper - "Life History of Hypolimnas bolina philippensis (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) on Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam, written by three Philippine academics at University of the Philippines, LosBaños and published in the Ecosystems and Development Journal - available to download from https://ovcre.uplb.edu.ph/journals-uplb/index.php/EDJ/article/view/750
