Field Notes

Description:

A moth from the Saturniidae family.
Identified as Antheraea assamensis, also known as the Assam Silkworm Moth.
Saturniids are among the largest moths in the world.
The huge moth has a wingspan that could easily cover your hands.
There are actually 4 spots / dots on the moth's wings.
2 dark orange dots on each side of the fore wings.
2 more darker spots on it's hind wings.
It's antennas are thick with "fur".
See the small moth below the large moth, it is about 1.2cm, so by comparing it's size with this giant species, I can estimate that it's wingspan is around 15cm / 150mm.

Habitat:

Kundasang mountains, Sabah, malaysia.

Notes:

Too bad this moth is standing high above the wall.
Because of that, I can't take a clear photo and measure it.
This is the first time I have ever seen this species, I hope I can see this species again up close and personal.
This is one of the larger moth species who are attracted to the lights here.
Other large moth species I found here are Loepa sikkima and Lyssa menoetius.
Thanks bayucca for the identification.

Thank you everybody for the comments. Welcome Chief RedEarth. Thanks bayucca for the suggestion, I have been looking for that for some time. Since this is a giant moth, I hope the larva - Muga Silkworm is a MEGA silkworm.
Synonym would be Antheraea youngi which is by some authors called a subspecies of Assamensis (Antheraea assamensis youngi). But this is also depending of exact location.
