Northern Flicker
Colaptes auratus
51.1388, -114.109
Field Notes
Description:
About the size of a pigeon and shaped roughly like one as well, the undersides of the wings are a brilliant burnt orange with black leading edges.
Habitat:
suburbs of Calgary, Alberta
Notes:
when i saw them they were displaying to each other in what i could only figure from watching all the BBC shows, was that they were two males arguing over something, they were both brightly colored and calling loudly while bobbing their heads side to side and almost mock fencing with their beaks but not coming within no more than 4 inches of each other. i could not see a female anywhere, but the two were equally colored so i figured they both were males. they're rather elusive and i've only been able to get these pictures ever, though i hear them calling frequently.
