Field Notes

Description:

Grey top with black eye line, white below. The blue Jays were creating quite a storm and when I went out I found this young Mockingbird in the tree they were harrassing.

Habitat:

He kept still for me except for moving his wings very fast which I felt was a sign of stress in this case.

Notes:

Liam I gave in to your feelings that it was a Mocker instead of a Shrike. It is extremely unusual to find a Mocker being mobbed.

Beautiful spotting, and photos -definitely a mocking bird - this is the bird that got me started into birding and the most comfortable I feel identifying. Love how you captured is beautiful yellow eyes.
Loggerhead Shrike's mask would be much more prominent and jet black; the breast would be cleaner and whiter; the wings would be black with two white feathers, not wing bars like your bird. The real clincher, I think, is the eye color. Loggerhead Shrikes have yellow irises, where as mockingbirds always have pale eyes.
