Field Notes

Description:

Black Walnut tree in the sunrise. My grandchildren used to hang upside-down in it's limbs with only there feet hooked into the tree Picture two is of a few nuts still in the tree. Picture three of the nuts on the ground still with outer shell.

Habitat:

Black Walnut trees are valuable for their wood. Their nuts are hard to crack and there is a soft outer shell that rots away and then a hard inner shell to crack before you can get the nuts out to eat..

Notes:

Each of my children in VA, PA and Ohio have Black Walnut trees on their properties. They do cause a problem with planting certain kinds of flowers that do not do well near them such as Rhododendrum.
