Description:

A fawn coloured bird with black and white zebra markings on back, wings and tail. A fan shaped crest and long, slender, gently curved beak. Usually on the ground. Probes the soil for food with beak slightly opened like forceps. When digging the crest is folded back and is pointed behind the head. It is opened from time to time. The call is a soft musical hoo-po. Eats insects, grubs and pupae so is beneficial for farmers. The nest is filthy in a natural tree hollow, known for the stench.

Habitat:

Lightly wooded country.

Yes they are fun to watch and very active too I remember Atul had to wait for a long time to get a good picture of the bird and fortunately he got one with the open crest. This one was very active on the ground too. I saw your's. Good to know that we have some common birds inspite of the distances.
I like the hoopoe they are fun to watch. Unfortunately the one I caught on photo had no patience. I had to stop the car and he didn't like the attention. Nice series!
Thanks António. It is nice to know that you have this bird there too. Great.
