Field Notes

Description:

about an inch long

Habitat:

on a sunflower plant in my garden

Notes:

I couldn't find anything that looks quite like this in my Google search. Closest thing was Sphinx ligustri privet hawkmoth. Maybe mine is just very young? Will look for it again over the next few days.

Species ID Suggestions

Rustic sphinx caterpillar

Manduca rustica

Check the 'hosts' section, in my link. They are known to feed on the Common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in Florida. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/ORN/Manduca_rustica.htm
