Nice spot and observations! I didn't know what Prince's Pine was and when I googled it another nice plant came up as well: http://montana.plant-life.org/species/chima_umbe.htm The unique (binomial) name for this is Lycopodium obscurum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrolycopodium_obscurum I wonder if your other spot is a dead one of these?
