Red-backed salamander (red-stripe phase)
Plethodon cinereus
40.583, -74.123
Field Notes
Description:
I found this faintly-speckled amphibian underneath leaf litter. On first impression, it looked like a worm because it was motionless and the feet were so small (between 3 and 4 inches in body length, however). It is one of two color morphs.
Habitat:
Seen in the woodlands of High Rock Park.
Notes:
The red-stripe phase is thought to behave differently than the darker lead-backed phase, with the former tending toward immobility when encountered.
