Field Notes

Description:

These tracks shows the elephant was dragging its trunk. I've searched high and low for reasons for this behavior, but can't seem to find anything that matches these tracks. During my search, I discovered a condition that has been found in elephants near where these tracks were. The condition is called "floppy trunk syndrome" or "flaccid trunk paralysis". I haven't been able to find any tracks made by the condition, but I would really like to know if this elephant was affected by it, or if this is a normal behavior. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Habitat:

Tracks spotted in the northern-most sector of Kruger National Park.
