Field Notes

Description:

nocturnal, small, spiky fur, not actually related to hedgehogs.

Habitat:

most of the island

Notes:

I spotted this Tenrec on a nighthike on the island of Nosy Mangabe. Tenrecs are elusive nocturnal mammals. They are very difficult to see. I did numerous nighthikes and only saw this one. These photos aren't great but they were all I could get after it quickly ran away. At first it was stunned by our lights, but after about 30 seconds, took off.

And this is the third Tenrec on PN, and the only spotting of this species. These are very cool little animals.
This is wonderful! When I was teaching, one of my favorite books to share with my classes was Tenrec's Twigs, by Bert Kitchen. So cool to see one "in person" so to speak.
