yes, I notice because I have a similar spotting and I also thought it was an Heliconian plant. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6883969
Thanks Jonathan. You're right Craig, very true.
Your spot is more what I would have associated with Calathea Dan. This one has me a bit stunned, although they do tend to have flowers that peak out from some kind of structure made of bracts (a bit like in many Zingiberaceae) so perhaps it shouldn't be so surprising. But with this stature, it's so Heliconia like I would've had it in the same family at least. Just shows it's perilous to assume I guess.
dandoucette I have seen your sppoting, we have that Calathea in CR, next time I will take a pic , the flowers are a little diferent.
It is very diferent than the one you spotted! The leaves of this plant were easily 8'. they were similary shaped to a heliconia but shorter - around 2 - 3' and rounder, and wider - up to a foot. The leaves were not variegated. I am so far from being an expert, but, the Calathea's come in a huge range of sizes, colors, and variations.
It's very different from the Calathea I spotted. I'm not sure if it gets blooms like this. Any idea Craig? http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6604532
Thanks Juan. It looks so much like a heliconia that I lumped it in with the others. The shape of the leaves, the manner which it flowers, and the overall appearence led me to believe it was one. Thanks for the help!!!
Hi lgCostaNut, I think this is not a Heliconia, is a Calathea
