Description:

shiny black with ridges on back, approx. 7/8 inch long, feathery antennae

Habitat:

spotted in scrub area adjacent to golf course

Thanks, Guys. I'mstill looking into it, but because of the are in which this beetle was spotted and evidence of sand 'mounds', I'm thinking this is a Florida deepdigger scarab beetle. Another interesting thing: the presence of dung beetles around burrowing owls homes is because the owls actually "bait" them by collecting dung for their homes. http://www.research.ufl.edu/publications/explore/v09n3/extract3.html
