Field Notes

Description:

Very large, stemless herb, 3-4m tall. Leaves all from base of plant, stalk to 3.5m tall, cylindrical, blade deeply, palmatedly lobed, to 1m long, 1.9m wide, surface pleated, lobes irregular, divided to past middle, lobe tips pointed, surface shiny on both sides, veins all parallel, extending to leaf tip. Flowers white, minute, crowded on a fleshy spike above several green white and reddish purple bracts, each about 25cm long.

Habitat:

Wet to very wet lowland forest under stories and disturbed sites' also cultivated. Altitude" Caribbean slope, sea level to 100m

Sure is Craig. Quite wonderful really. The fruit on this is quite smooth on the outside. I am going to upload another that has fruit that is quite bumpy on the outside. They are likey individual differences, however, this next one is from the base of Arenal Volcano which a 3000' elevation difference.
Great spot by the way! This fruit is really quite an exhibitionist isn't it?! Peeling itself from a dull green to this carnival of colour!
Another misleading common name as Carludovica are not Palms but members of another monocot family, Cyclanthaceae, whose leaves are often very palm like. This could well be Carludovica palmata but can't say for sure.
