Field Notes

Description:

11.5" This large dove is an exotic species for us and is rather rare in Florida.

Habitat:

Hangs out in the same location as Mourning & Eurasian Collared-Doves. This was in my yard. It visits the bird feeders but is much more skittish than the other species.

Thanks so much Ceherzog. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7634662 this is how they look. Large feet ,in a group. Red eye.I believe that this is a juvenile.
I just found out that these doves were introduced into Florida for hunting and they are now established.
Emma...I don't think they are too ducky looking but they swim & dive . Have you seen American Coots? Maybe that's what you saw? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Coot
@ ceherzog this bird is quite elegant looking. its amazing what a change in season can do .i went back to Heather farms yesterday and was just amazed to see the new set of birds. There were about 20 totally black duck like birds swimming in the lake. There were no dragonflies at all! Little gray crested bird, crowned sparrows etc . Do cormorants swim and are look duck like in the water?
Yes, I noticed it on mine and the shot you just sent but your's just seems huge especially in shots 2 & 3. It's funny because I kept wondering why there were so many doves in my trees..and then I read a post on a rare bird alert that someone had a wwdove, I looked at my feeder on the way out and it was full of them!
I think yours has a beautiful blue ring too if you look close enough. but i think this spot has the best shot http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6569416
Thanks...but, your shots are really spectacular. I love the way the blue eye rings stands out. I'm assuming that is during mating season.
gorgeous shot http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6712431
