Field Notes

Description:

A completely black Wood Boring Beetle without any metallic coloration. Most beetles of this family are metallic and often called Jewel Beetles. This one has a dense covering of white hair on the underside and a more scarce covering on the upper side, unusual also for this family of beetles. About 1 cm in length. In the first 2 pictures you can see the pattern of the eyes. Family Buprestidae.

Habitat:

Found sitting in the middle of a leaf along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Km 18.5, 1164 meters.

Notes:

Acmaeodera is a genus of hundreds of species, many if not most with some kind of yellow or white spots. Completely black species exist as well as all black variants of spotted species (which you can see by scrolling through images of Acmaeodera on Google).
