Red Palm Weevil
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus
36.8096, -3.94465
Field Notes
Description:
A very large weevil with a loud 'buzzing' flight
Habitat:
Has become established as a serious pest among date palms.
Notes:
Causes considerable damage to palms, especially date palms. The adult will lay between 300 to 500 eggs. They are often attracted to damaged palms or palms that may have simply had a few fronds removed. The grubs will eat away at the heart of the palm, often unseen and will often totally destroy the palm. Very difficult and expensive to control.
