Field Notes

Description:

Easily recognisable due to its black and white ringed tail. The body is greyish/brown with pale cream underbelly and dark facial features. They are very social animals living in family groups of 30 or more. They are omnivorous and spend much of their time on the ground, most active in the day. Can often be seen "sunbaking" facing their pale underbellies towards the sun to keep warm. Males perform scent marking and "stink fights" by scenting their tails and wafting it at other males.

Habitat:

Endemic to the island of Madagascar, they are very widespread in forest and scrub.

Notes:

These were not spotted in the wild, these lemurs were spotted at Alma Park Zoo in Brisbane, QLD. Such interesting animals to watch, so social and playful and very good posers!
