Pieris rapae
42.3264, -85.2392
Field Notes
Description:
Spotted outside my window on a clematis seed head in my garden .
An attractive butterfly but it was accidently introduced to North America in the 1860s. Very common now and considered a pest because the caterpillars eat cabbage and many other crucifers and related plants. Adults nectar from a very wide array of plants, including mustard, dandelion, red clover, aster, and mint.
Habitat:
All habitats, including bogs, meadows, woods, and backyard gardens.
