Field Notes

Description:

A steely grey to dark coloured lizard of the Iguanidae family. Named after the bony 'horns' on the iguanas snout that resemble a rhinoceros horn. They are a very heavy bodied animal with strong legs and a crest of horned scales going from neck to tail tip. They can weigh between 5-9 kilograms. Mostly a diurnal species and will quickly escape when threatened or aggresively bite or strike with their thick tail when cornered.

Habitat:

Primarily found on islands of the Caribbean, prefering areas of scrub woodland, dry forests, rocky habitats and lowlands. Primarily live in rocky outcrops with little cover by vegetation.

Notes:

This is a captive animal spotted at Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.
