Description:
Woodpecker with yellow eyes, red head, white above beak and on chest. It lives in groups and pecks storage holes and deposits acorns in them, to eat later.
Habitat:
Oak trees, both California black oak and Oregon white oak, in dry oak savannah on the southern Oregon border with California. Living closeby humans.
Notes:
They will use dead limbs of the oak when they are available, but soon began making storage holes in the wooden house. Since covering it in metal siding would have cost $23,000, it was decided to let the woodpeckers have it. They often lose their acorns inside the hollow walls.
