Field Notes

Description:

A silver grey to dark brown lizard with short spines scattering its body. The body is flattened which helps it to camoflage along with its colouring. It gets its name from the spiny pouch or "beard" that expands when it is threatened. The inside of the mouth is bright yellow and is also displayed when threatened. Often mistakenly called a Frillneck Lizard but is actually very different, which is a perfect example why scientific names are so very important!

Habitat:

Native to Australia, found commonly in in dry forests, woodlands, parks and gardens, and also can be seen basking on the roadsides which is why many are seen dead on the highways.

Notes:

This little guy is very young and my brother found him in our paddock when he was mowing. So we picked him up and let him go somewhere a little more sheltered so the resident Laughing Kookaburra didn't make a meal of him. Such a gorgeous little guy and was so patient, animals really do know when you are trying to help them!
