Field Notes

Description:

Also known as common, warted or gem-studded puffball. White when young, becomes browner as it mature. Surface of the cap covered in small spines or warts, that tend to fall off with maturity. When mature, develops a central hole. Up to 10cm tall.

Habitat:

Foothills of Jura mountains range; wooded area of town park, forest floor, among the fallen and decaying leaves and organic matter.

Notes:

Appreciated as a comestible mushroom when young (all white), said to have slightly sugary taste.
