Description:
Easily identified as this is the only Australian bird with a large electric blue patch of bare skin around the eye and face. On immature birds this patch is a greenish yellow colour. They grow to around 30cm in length. They have a long curved beak designed for obtaining nectar. Their head is black with some white bands, the back is olive green and the underbelly is white. Sometimes referred to as Bananabird.
Habitat:
Native to Australia, found in open forests, woodlands and scrubs, forest edges and clearings and very common in urban parks and gardens.
Notes:
This beautiful bird was spotted in a small shrub in a car park garden in Tin Can Bay, QLD. I was just leaving and spotted them foraging in the tree and did a bit of "drive by shooting" photographing it out of the window of my car! The light was just right to pick up the real electric colour of the blue on the face.
