Field Notes

Description:

Common edible mushroom occuring on wood, especially on deciduous trees. Can be cultivated and is grown commercially around the world for food.

Habitat:

deciduous woodland on dead trees.

Notes:

Considered a medicinal mushroom as it contains statins such as lovastatin which work to reduce cholesterol.

Thanks Craig! I thinks so, too. Sometimes it's really hard to identify a mushroom correctly when it changes shape and color during it's development.

This is a really nice series Meik. I think with fungal fruiting bodies more than anything else, it really helps to see the different stages of their development.

I added some new pictures to this spotting to illustrate how the mushroom looks, when it's several weeks old. At this stage the spores are released. I took the pictures this morning and the spores were drifting through the air like ghostly fingers.

I haven't tried them, wanted to see how large they grow and if they change in color when they're older.
