Also growing in our yard in Tennessee http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7085602 The fruit are edible though quite tart!
Interesting I've seen these before in the scrub brush around my neighborhood. The pods open up and there is a seed inside. Most I was able to find is it is a common name of Chinese Lantern Plant. Hope this helps!
