Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized, broad-winged, rather compact raptor with broad, short neck and medium-length tail. Glides on flatter wings, generally with slightly raised inner wing and slightly lowered outer wing. Plumage variable, from very dark to very pale. Off-white tail densely barred grey, pale band across chest regardless of morph. From below, trailing edge of wing and wing-tips blackish, involving whole 'fingers'. Rest of flight-feathers whitish, barred dark.

Habitat:

Fairly common. Breeds in forests or small woods with access to open lnd, farmland, meadows or marshes. Food mainly voles, also birds, rabbits, reptiles, amphibians, insects, earthworms. Nests in trees. Often seen perched on fence posts or telegraph poles watching for prey.
