Description:

Probably a juvenile as this one was about 12 inches long. The record for the species is 51 inches long. A non-venomous snake with distinctive markings.

Habitat:

Spotted in a creek in the Ouachita National Forest of Arkansas.

It seems like water snakes on every continent have a couple things in common: obscure markings of gray and cream, heavily keeled scales, and very ill-tempered. But, I still really like to find them. Great catch Brian. Thanks for sharing.
