Field Notes

Description:

Sparrowlike
•Small songbird.
•Stout, pointed bill.
•Rusty patch on shoulders.
•Yellow or yellowish on chest.
•Breeding male has large black "V" on yellow chest.

Habitat:

Prairie grasslands of the United States, the Dickcissel congregates in huge flocks in migration and on its tropical grassland wintering grounds.

Notes:

A very RARE visitor to Utah. The former cow pasture adjacent to the Great Salt Lake has been slated for future housing development. An unusually wet spring and early summer resulted in the dense, tall weeds seen in the photograph.
