to add to dandoucette's comment, protea are a woody, shrubby (sometimes small tree like) plant where ginger are are not. Protea also have very stiff leaves with a grayish cast to them.
There's a few things I look for that set them apart. The petals on the Ginger are wide and rounded where as Protea are skinny and pointed. Protea petals are always held erect and the Ginger petals are more droopy. Also Ginger has a uniformly colored flower where as Protea seems to be at least 2 shades or colors. I must say I am much more familiar with Ginger. I hope this helps Alice.
Dan, out of curiosity how do you tell Protea from Ginger?
