This one is probably not possible to ID from this angle. Here are the Micrathyria possibilities I was using from the list: Micrathyria atra Micrathyria laevigata Micrathyria ocellata Micrathyria aequalis
And Happy New Year to you also... One filled with the possibilities to get all those different views without the object flying away!
Having fun :) Like most insects there are a lot of characteristics to learn. With odonata there are eyes, thorax, abdomen and wing veination. I have learned to try to get as many photo views as possible to inspect later. Not an easy task as you know. You have a great New Year :)
Wow interesting link Joanne. I didn't realize the eyes were so different! Lack of observation on my part... Sorry. I'm keeping you busy! Take a break for New Year!
Pam, the INaturalist observation was correct about this suggestion and its mate PN http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/41358005. Return both to Unknown and I will look again. Good to have help :) Here is a reference about the eyes touching differently in different families of dragonflies: http://efg.cs.umb.edu/keys/html//OdeFamKey_html/N102F0.html
thanks Joanne... going well!
