Field Notes

Description:

The largest of the bamboo lemurs weighing up to 2.5kgs, it is critically endangered in the wild with populations estimated at just 130 individuals found in National Parks with just 2 in Ranomafana and has been listed on "The World's 25 most endangered primates". The major threats to this lemur are the following: slash and burn farming, mining, bamboo and other logging, and slingshot hunting.

Habitat:

Rainforests, dependant on bamboo in particular Cathariostachys madagascariensis.

Notes:

To even see this lemur in the wild was an awe inspiring experience which did bring a tear to my eye.
Interestingly the daily amount of cyanide they consume (from the bamboo) is enough to kill a human!
