Northern walkingstick
Diapheromera femorata
40.8262, -77.7754
Field Notes
Description:
Male walking stick found on the trunk of a standing dead oak tree. Photographed in the hand of my 2 year old, so it really isn't as enormous as it looks - body maybe 4-5 inches long.
Habitat:
Oak-maple forest
Notes:
I was excited to find this male because I found the female of this species earlier this fall: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7494878.
According to herper.com there are only two species of walking sticks found in PA: Diapheromera femorata and Anisomorpha ferruginea. This one is not A. ferruginea, and looks like a match with D. femorata on bugguide.net. (http://www.herper.com/insects/naphasmids...)
