Field Notes

Description:

Epiphytic ferns are common in the area.

Habitat:

Growing on the buttress root of a matoa (Pometia pinnata) tree in a large semi-urban yard & garden.

Notes:

The soil in this part of the yard is almost pure sand. The host tree root is encrusted with sand that has splashed onto it during rains.

Pretty sure it's Asplenium nidus...it is abundant in Indonesia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asplenium_nidus

Looks like a fern, possibly an asplenium to me.

Dan thanks. It's just off the ground but I can take a photo tomorrow. It's not an orchid, more akin to this type: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7010062 or maybe it's just rooted. I didn't really get down and inspect it today as the mosquitoes were brutal this afternoon ;-)

This is interesting Scott. Do you have any pics of it from a distance, just to see how it is on the tree? Will be interesting to keep an eye on it to see if it flowers. Doesn't look like an orchid or anything I'm really familiar with.
