spotted crossing a highway into a pasture

The first is a female, the second a male (notice the "beard"-a tuft of modified feathers resembling coarse hair- hanging from his breast).

Thanks, Alice. It's not unusual to see them in the early morning, but this pair was on the road about noon. Like a lot of spottings, it was a matter of chance: we could have taken a different road back to the coast.
