Field Notes

Description:

is a medium-sized hummingbird and was named after Anna Massena, Duchess of Rivoli.

Anna's Hummingbird has a glossy green back and grey underneath with green flanks. They have long slender straight bills. They are known for their magnificent red head.

The Anna's hummingbird feeds on nectar from flowers and feeders. They also feed on insects and spiders that they catch in mid air or take off of tree trunks and branches. Sometimes they will also eat tree sap.

Unlike most hummingbirds, the Anna's hummingbird sings during courtship. They are very territorial.

Habitat:

In some parts of their range the Anna's hummingbird is a permanent resident. They are the only hummingbird regularly seen in winter along the
west coast, from British Columbia, south to Arizona. They are the only hummingbird that will stay the winter in northern climates. There are enough winter flowers and food in these areas to allow them to do this.

Notes:

They have a head with ruby red reflection, it can not be appreciated on this picture because the hummingbird is not facing the light of the sun
