Field Notes

Description:

Caught this in our tentcamp in Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania.
Black snake of about 60cm. Had a bit purple-ish spots on the upperside of the left and right side of the head
Eyes have a round pupil.

The rangers said it was a juvenile black mamba, but our fieldguides were inconclusive.

it looks a lot like crotaphopeltis hotamboeia to me, you do get a darker form as seen here www.sareptiles.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=23225 and I do believe they are found in tanzania?
Yeah this genus of snakes difinitely looks more like it ! Thanks !
This is definitely not a black mamba. I am fairly certain about this being a species in the genus Lycophidion, which are harmless snakes.
