Field Notes

Description:

Copper, bronze, green, brown iridescent. 30mm long ~ 1.25" x 9mm ~ 5/16". Found sunning on my back. I was wearing a black shirt. It was about 3pm.

Habitat:

Found while splitting firewood (no live trees were used; storm damage, etc.). Locust, maple, and others, but no pine. Northern Kentucky woodlands (protected tree farm).

Notes:

It came from a natural tree farm. Four were seen in a matter of ten minutes. Need to know if it's a problem. I've done some research, but want this entry to be objective. Thanks for any help.

On closer inspection your beetle doesn't look as long-and-lean as the emerald ash borer. I think it is something else.

It is a metallic wood-boring beetle in the family Buprestidae. One critter of concern in that family is the Emerald Ash Borer - you'll want to make sure it's not that. I'm not familiar with them, so I can't help.
