Field Notes

Description:

White owl with black "stripes"

Habitat:

They usually nest in the Arctic tundra of the northermost stretches of Alaska, Canada and Eurasia. They winter south through Canada and northern Eurasia, with irruptions occurring further south in some years. Between 1967 and 1975, Snowy Owls bred on the remote island of Fetlar in the Shetland Isles north of Scotland, UK.

Notes:

As you can see the fence in the background of the picture, this owl isn't originally from here, but was brought here and is kept in a Ljubljana ZOO.

Many thanks Ursula! :D And yes, they are such gorgeous creatures. I worked at a birds of prey centre where we had one of these, and I loved getting to feed him :) Incidentally, his name was Fetlar, now I know why!
Laura, I edited it now :) Thx for reminding me that. Yeah, it was a real delight to see it, since at first it just sat there and then gave a real performance. Really beautiful animal this Snowy Owl! :) Plus usually you cannot see it, because it's hiding in a nest or elsewhere.
Ursula, was this owl captive? Only asking since snowy owls aren't found as far south in Europe as this :) If it is a captive, would you mind stating that in the notes or description? Otherwise it can be confusing haha! But snowy owls are always a delight to see, wild or not!
No. It was just sitting in the bushes :)
