Field Notes

Description:

Armillaria mellea is a plant pathogen and a species of Honey fungus. It causes Armillaria root rot in many plant species. The mushrooms are edible but some people may be intolerant to them. The fungus produces mushrooms around the base of trees it has infected. As the fungus causes root rot, symptoms also appear in the crowns of infected trees as death and dieback of the branches. This species is capable of producing light via bioluminiscence

Habitat:

Armillaria mellea grows throughout North America and other parts of the world. The fruiting body or mushroom known as stump mushroom, stumpie, honey mushroom, pipinky or pinky grows typically on hardwoods but may be found around and on other living and dead wood or in open areas

Notes:

that was the biggest found i made the last years, from edible mushrooms. they were everywhere, the big clusters at the ground, then 2 little clusters round the tree and several clusters at the stem of the tree. I came several night back, to try to let them lighten, (bioluminiscence) but my maglite wasn't strong ( or doesn't had the right light-frequenz {real sunlight spectras}) enough or the fungi hadn't the right conditions for this. (nutritions). i failed to make the shots (sadly). but this time i tried some mushrooms from the cluster, and must say: it isn't really my taste. i will stay by my 3-5 favorited ones.
