House sparrow (male, summer)

Robust, with broad body and fairly big head with stout bill. Plumage rather bushy and 'loose', and often looks matted and unkempt. Main features are heavily black-streaked brownish back, squat posture with legs drawn in when perched. Male has black bib, lores and eye reagion. Grey crown with chestnut-brown sides. Throat-side whitish, but cheeks usually dusky grey. Broad white wing bar. Bill predominantly black when breeding.
