Description:
The plumage of the male is a bright red, which gave rise to the name. Part of the wings and tail are black. The species shows sexual dimorphism, and the least showy plumage of the female, the brown on the upper and the lower reddish-brown.
The immature male is similar in plumage to the female but the bill is not totally black and brown. An important feature of the genre Ramphocelus, which occurs only in males, is the gleaming white callus at the base of the jaw.
Despite the beauty of plumage, this species is not considered to have among the most beautiful corner. The vocalization call (or warning) is very hard. The song is a melodious chirping and trisyllabic, which is often repeated without hurry. Sometimes, some individuals vocalize together.
It weighs 31g and measures 19 inches long.
Habitat:
Found exclusively in Brazil, Paraíba to Santa Catarina. Varies from uncommon to locally common in low barns, edges of forests, marshes and fields, sometimes in parks and squares of cities. There are two sub-species: R. b. bresilius and R. b. dorsalis. The first occurs from southern Bahia to Paraiba. The second presents the plumage of the back darker and occurs from southern Bahia to Santa Catarina. For wide area of distribution and number of individuals recorded, this species is considered Least Concern (LC) of extinction in the wild.
